Max joined the IFS in 2020. His research focuses on the NHS and adult social care in England. One part of his work examines the funding, resources and performance of the NHS. Past projects have examined NHS productivity, NHS waiting lists, the geographic distribution of health spending and the impacts of Covid. Alongside colleagues George Stoye and Ben Zaranko, Max won the 2022 Harding Prize for Trustworthy Communication for their interactive NHS waiting lists tool. Another part of Max’s work focuses on the health and social care workforce. Past projects have examined NHS staff retention, the impacts of the 2016 junior doctor strikes, and emerging NHS roles. Ongoing projects consider NHS career progression, the labour supply decisions of consultants, and the adult social care workforce.
