We need to press the parties on the questions that really matter on inequality

Jeremy Paxman missed a golden opportunity to question Ed Miliband further on his approach on inequality and what the Labour party might do should it win on May 7. There appears to be a significant difference between the two main parties in their philosophies and policies with respect to inequality, says Paul Johnson writing in the Times. But we need to quiz them on these issues to try to elicit some real information.

Pensioners are no longer worse off than the rest of the population – a triumph of decades of social policy

Comment

Following David Cameron's announcement that universal pensioner benefits will again be protected, should the Conservative Party win the election, Andrew Hood examines the support given to pensioners in an article published in the Daily Telegraph. Over the past 30 years, pensioner incomes have caught up with those of non-pensioners. The data show very clearly that pensioners are now no more likely to be in poverty than the rest of the population. And after accounting for housing costs, the typical pensioner is now better off than the typical non-pensioner.

In work funded by the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister in Northern Ireland, the IFS today published an update of our previous income projections for Northern Ireland and for the UK as a whole. This observation draws out what this research tells us about the likely path of household incomes in the UK in the next few years.
