<p>With the publication of the UK Government's Electricity Bill (1988), planning was initiated for the break-up and sale of the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) into three privatised companies. 'National Power' and 'PowerGen' would inherit 70 per cent and 30 per cent of the generating plant, respectively, and would compete for contracts to supply the twelve 'Area Boards', who are responsible for electric power distribution in separate geopraphical areas.</p>
