Chancellor John Healey will present his first Budget on Wednesday 28th October. War in the Middle East has pushed up government borrowing costs and means that inflation over the coming years will be higher than was expected in the spring, both of which will affect the OBR's forecasts for debt and borrowing. The Chancellor is likely to announce new policy measures: he may aim to give households more 'breathing space', revise spending plans for public services, change the tax system or give further detail on devolution.
At an online webinar the following day, Thursday 29th October, IFS Director Helen Miller will give her response and IFS researchers will present their overnight analysis of the economic and fiscal outlook, as well as the key tax and spending decisions announced in the Budget.
