The UK recently experienced its deepest recession since the Second World War, during which GDP fell by over 6 per cent between the first quarter of 2008 and the third quarter of 2009. We would naturally expect these falls in national income to have consequences for UK households' living standards. In this chapter, we examine how earnings, employment and household incomes evolved immediately before, during and after the Great Recession in the UK.

It's a simple enough question, but you may be surprised by the answer. Today, the IFS launches its first ever iPhone app, which estimates where in the income distribution you and your household fit in.

How could the government perform a gender impact assessment of tax and benefit changes?

The Equalities Act 2010 places an obligation on the government to give 'due consideration' to the effects of its policies on gender inequalities. The IFS was asked by the Fawcett society to consider ways in which our tax and benefit microsimulation model, TAXBEN could be used as part of an assessment of the separate impact of Budget measures on men and women. We have today published some simple analysis that does this.
