Jonathan is an Associate Director at IFS and Head of the Retirement, Savings, and Ageing sector. He is a Co-Principal Investigator of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing and a Director of the Pensions Review, a review of the UK pension system and of the future of financial security in retirement. Most of his research focuses on understanding economic activity in later life, pensions, saving for retirement, and their interactions with public policies. He also leads the Deaton Review Country Studies project, which examines labour market and income inequalities in 17 European and North American countries. He is a former editor of the flagship IFS reports on Living Standards, Inequality, and Poverty.

40% of the growth in the UK’s workforce since 2008 has come from people working for their own business. This event showcased new IFS research on the characteristics and behaviour of this population and discussed the design of policies aimed at promoting small business.
40% of the growth in the UK’s workforce since 2008 has come from people working for their own business. IFS researchers are using administrative tax records to learn more about the self-employed and company owner-managers, including their characteristics, how these groups have been changing in recent years and how they respond to the tax system.
From tomorrow, a large proportion of private sector employees will pay more into their pensions – and their employers will have to contribute more too. This is the first of two planned steps in the next two years that will increase the minimum contributions that most employees and their employers will, by default, make to a workplace pension. This is all part of the government’s automatic enrolment policy aimed at increasing retirement saving.
This short briefing note summarises what the newly released HBAI data tell us about how living standards have changed after five years of recovery from the Great Recession, how this differs between different groups, and the implications for inequality and poverty.
The falls in the proportion of young adults owning their own home have been documented in previous work. In this briefing note, we provide up-to-date analysis of these falls in homeownership, and which groups of young adults have seen the sharpest falls.
