The IFS is greatly saddened to learn of the death of our friend and colleague, Alan Budd, who died on 13th January 2023 at the age of 85. Sir Alan, who was knighted in 1997, was a respected economist, in academia and in business, and influential in UK economic policymaking.

We are proud that Alan had a long association with IFS. He chaired the IFS Tax Law Review Committee between 2006 and 2012, having previously led a working group to produce a groundbreaking report on Making Tax Law; he had been an active member of the IFS Council, our governing body, since 2007.

Alan was enthusiastic about the work of the IFS and its role in informing and improving public policy. Despite many other interests and commitments, he was generous with his time and regularly attended Council meetings always making thoughtful contributions, and always being supportive and positive. He was pleased to join IFS staff and fellow Council members for dinner after the meetings, despite increasing age and, sometimes, ill health, and was always a friendly, engaging and open dining companion. He will be sorely missed.

Our condolences go to Alan’s family.
