Obesity, nutrition and health behaviours

Obesity and other diet related diseases are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the developed world. Understanding how consumers make decisions over the food and drinks that they buy is key to assessing the potential effects of policies aimed at improving nutrition.

The IFS is a partner in the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Obesity Policy Research Unit. This unit brings together researchers from UCL, the Institute for Fiscal Studies, City University and King's College, London to cover a wide range of topics relating to childhood obesity, including social inequalities, the early years of childhood, and marketing to children and families. Publications related to this area of research can be found below and on the Obesity Policy Research Unit Website.

This work ties in with our broader research agenda on consumer behaviour (including work on alcohol and other excise taxes).
