It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear former IFS colleague Alastair Muriel (whose pen name was Al Blyth), following a short battle with bowel cancer. Ali left a lasting mark on everyone he worked with. He had boundless enthusiasm, a sharp wit, the most generous of souls and an incredible ability to write beautifully. Following a very distinguished career as an IFS economist, he turned his many talents to play and screen writing, with further glittering success. Our thoughts are now with his wife Sam and two young children.

Self-effacing and humorous to the last, there was one message that Ali wanted to pass on to us: in his own words, "if your poo has blood in it, go and see a doctor. But, above all else, go out and enjoy the sunshine!"
