There are widespread concerns about how well prepared the current generation of working-age people are for retirement. Two decades on from the Pensions Commission, which recommended the introduction of automatic enrolment, the Pensions Review will provide new evidence on which groups are still facing the most significant challenges.

At this in-person only event in Westminster, IFS researchers will present new findings on how prepared private sector employees and self-employed workers are for retirement and to what extent higher saving for retirement needs to be balanced with other financial goals in working-life, as well as new policy suggestions to help address these challenges.

The new reports are being published as part of the Pensions Review - led by the Institute for Fiscal Studies and in partnership with the abrdn Financial Fairness Trust - which is a large multi-year project that assesses the consequences of current pension policy, the economic environment, and individual behaviour on future living standards in retirement.

We will have opening remarks from the new Pensions Minister, Emma Reynolds MP.

Following the presentations from IFS researchers, there will be a panel discussion featuring expert opinions in this debate, and a Q&A with the audience.

Our Panel:

  • Baroness Jeannie Drake, House of Lords and former Pensions commissioner
  • Will Sandbrook, Managing Director of NEST Insight
  • Janette Weir, Director of Ignition House

This event will be chaired by David Gauke, former Secretary of State for Work & Pensions.
