CIOT/IFS Debate: Should the government introduce an online sales tax?

The government is consulting on whether to introduce an online sales tax to pay for a reduction in business rates. Would that be a good idea? Would it level the playing field between online and offline shopping or would it just be retail Luddism? How might it work in practice? What would be the effects on businesses, consumers and the high street?

Join our expert panel for a lively debate on this topical issue.

Our panel will include:

  • Stuart Adam - Institute for Fiscal Studies
  • Gabby Donald - KPMG (and Chair, CIOT Indirect Taxes Committee)
  • Nick Lakin - Kingfisher plc
  • Alasdair McGowan - eBay UK
  • Chair: Peter Rayney – President, Chartered Institute of Taxation

This event is free to attend and open to all with an interest in the topic. The format for this event will be short speeches / presentations from panellists followed by a discussion, with the opportunity for audience members to make comments and put questions to our panel.

You can join us at the venue or watch the debate online. The in-person event will be followed by a drinks reception for attendees.
