Help us to inform and improve government policy and public debate through high-quality, independent research.
IFS has a vital public role, providing independent and accessible commentary on the most important economic issues facing the country.
Our high-quality empirical research is frequently cited by journalists and politicians when assessing the impact of public policy decisions on individuals, households, businesses and the nation’s public finances. Our commentary on party manifestos and government policies leads the public debate, providing individuals with the tools to understand and evaluate complex policies. As such IFS enables people to understand politics, to discern between evidence and bias and, ultimately, to be empowered to make political and financial decisions in their own interest.
IFS is entirely neutral of political parties, companies, individuals and pressure groups. In elections, it acts as public referee; in the course of government it assesses policy and holds governments of all stripes to account when numbers don’t add up or policies are less than transparent.
How you can help
Income from our corporate membership scheme allows us to achieve real – and lasting - impact.
Almost all of the Institute’s income is raised through traditional research funding, a reflection of the very high quality of its work. But unrestricted funds provided through corporate membership allow IFS to provide quick policy responses and to expand on work that has been funded in the traditional way. Without these we are limited in the impact we can achieve – with them we can ensure we influence the policy debate long into the future.
