The Independent Fiscal Commission for Northern Ireland, chaired by IFS Director Paul Johnson, has now published its Interim Report on the case for Northern Ireland gaining additional powers over taxation.

The report considers over 20 different UK taxes and lists those which are considered good candidates for devolution in Northern Ireland. These will be considered further in the second phase of the Commission's work. The Interim Report is hoped to 'stimulate and inform further debate' on Northern Ireland's taxation powers in the lead-up to the Commission's Final Report, which will be published prior to the NI Assembly Election in May 2022.

Commenting on the release of the report, Paul Johnson said the Commission is “a chance for people to help shape and inform local policy. We want to continue engaging with as wide a range of people as possible. Only through this engagement will a meaningful report with meaningful conclusions be completed, that will be of benefit to Northern Ireland.”
